Education

Concordia University Nebraska, Bachelor of Science- Secondary Education/English (comprehensive program), 3.43 GPA.

Experience

I have taught and tutored students at Seward High School in Nebraska during times of need between 2009 and 2011. From there I went on to do my student teaching at Seward High as well as in Las Vegas, Nevada. I taught reading, writing, American literature, ancient literature, short stories, spelling, grammar, British literature, modern literature, adolescent literature, and worked with students having special needs. The number of field work experience hours during college (not including my time student teaching) was over 100. The comprehensive English program at Concordia Nebraska requires the student to take double the English classes the basic English degree. I studied British, American, ancient, modern, and adolescent literature as well as much study of Shakespeare, creative writing, poetry, song-writing, and theology/philosophy. I also have experience in substitute teaching for elementary through high school levels. In addition to teaching English, I also have had the opportunity to teach and certify students as Lay Responders and Professional Rescuers through the American Red Cross. I became an authorized instructor in 2008 and was able to teach a lab at Indiana University. I continue to teach classes for the Red Cross upon a need basis. Aside from teaching, I also have much experience with children and youth in other settings. I have worked at a youth camp in Seymour, Indiana for the last nine years. I was program director during the summer of 2011. This job required that I write the camp curriculum, organize programs, manage summer staff, create daily assignments and scheduling, coordinate events and so on. In addition to this, I also started and direct a music festival each summer, which is held at camp. It is a weekend-long event that requires much organization, networking, booking bands and speakers, creating activities and events, and much more. Another way I have used my teaching skills is for swimming lessons. I enjoy teaching swimming for children of all ages. I would like to be a tutor because I enjoy working with kids and youth. I believe that each person can achieve, and that we all have different strengths and weaknesses. As a teacher, I strive to equip students to take initiative in their learning, to gain the proper tools necessary for continued learning, to be encouraged in who they are and all they can do. I'm passionate about English and find many ways that it benefits and applies to our lives. I enjoy personalizing lessons to fit each student's individual needs and interests. It is not about me; it's about them.
